Recommended Steps for Installing CDROM Drive

  1. Connecting to enhanced IDE controller - secondary IDE connector
This method can be used even when you have sound card with a CDROM interface (IDE or proprietary) available.

    1. Set CDROM jumper, at rear, to "master"
    2. Connect power, IDE data cable (like hard drive cable) to the second IDE connector on controller, Meanwhile, another IDE cable connects hard drive(s) to the first IDE connector.
    3. Don't set any drive for the CDROM in CMOS. Select and install the proper CDROM driver from diskette.

One line is added to the boot file \config.sys for the CDROM driver (device=c:\cdrom_dir\...).
One line is added to the boot file \autoexec.bat for \cdrom_dir\mscdex.exe ... If this file in your DOS directory is newer than the provided file, you may use it instead, by changing the directory to the DOS one.

    4. Power up the machine and make sure the CDROM drive D: or E: is activated. If not, check cables and drivers.

  2. Connecting to regular IDE, or enhanced IDE controller - primary IDE connector
Same steps as the above (1), except for the steps (1-1) and (1-2):
    1. Set CDROM jumper, at rear, to "slave"
    2. Connect power, the IDE hard drive cable on the second spare IDE connector

  3. Connecting to sound card with IDE CDROM interface
Remember that you may also follow the precedure (1) to install CDROM.
    1. Set CDROM jumper, at rear, to "master"
    2. Connect data and audio cables to sound card.
    3. Follow sound card instruction on installing CDROM and set proper jumpers or install drivers.
    4. Make sure IRQ, DMA settings of the sound card, including the Midi/MPU ones, have no conflicts with other devices in the system.

  4. Windows-95 CDROM installation
    1. Complete version: follow the procedure (1) or (2), and install from Win95 setup diskette.
    2. Upgrade version: install CDROM driver as above (1-3) in DOS first, and make sure CDROM works first before installing Win95.
